Downwind Daze 2022/2023 - The Legend Continues

These Downwind Events may be the most exciting time you will have on a SUP board. The wind on your back, surfing the wind-runners, great paddle community around you and souvenir high-vis top to keep. And as George Thomas says, "This is the best paddle event in the known universe!"
Book the dates into your paddle diary now:

Mar 4/5

Apart from the fun of downwind paddling and an introduction to the associated skills for paddlers new to this discipline, we encourage everyone registering for the Lakes Entrance event or state technical and or distance events to use Downwind Daze as a training tool. You will be surrounded by a crew with similar goals and a vast paddle knowledge-base to tap into.

As always, we plan in a two-day window to get the best conditions. Course, times, etc, will be emailed out/undated on the event site the Thursday evening prior to the event.

We will be having 3 starts (pending the number of entrants per division):

1)  The community crew -  paddlers who are confidant over 10 – 12k, who don’t want to race but want enjoy/learn some fun downwind paddle time and skills

2) Racing women and all over 60 crew

3) Racing Men

Safety craft (jetski) will be present on the water. All registrants must wear the event high-vis top so safety craft pilot is able to do his job. We include an event safety briefing a few minutes prior to the start. That said, after 5 years our safety crew have not had to rescue one paddler and we would like that record to continue.

Safety Gear Requirements - checked at registration

  • Whistle
  • PFD and leg rope are mandatory
  • High-vis tops are supplied as part of entry and must be worn during the event
  • Waterproof phone with Coast Guard safety app in waterproof bag or EPRB required
  • Paddlers must have water onboard (and maybe some energy snacks - gels, lollies) during the event

We encourage all entering to have some Downwind paddling experience - please read the SUP Downwinding information guide on the SUP Vic website under 'Getting Started’.

Entry is available up to and including the day of the race via the SUP Vic website - you will need to show your receipt
